DCENT S vs Tangem: Which Card Wallet Should You Buy?

DCENT S and Tangem are the two most direct competitors in the card wallet category right now. Both tap against your phone through NFC. Both use an EAL6+ security chip, the same grade used in biometric passports and bank cards. Both default to seedless backup. Both also let you use a traditional seed phrase if you want one. Both cost around $50 to $60. If you are deciding between them, the choice comes down to one thing: how the backup works.

What they share

Both companies launched around 2017 to 2018 and neither has had a verified case of a user losing funds through a hardware exploit since then. Both wallets are mobile-only. No desktop app, no cable signing. Both support well over 10,000 tokens across 100+ networks, added through the app rather than the card itself. Both are cheap enough that buying one to try is not a painful experiment.

The backup difference

This is the part that actually matters.

Tangem gives you two or three identical cards. Any card in your set can sign transactions. If you lose one card, you just use another. The trade-off: if someone finds one of your cards and knows your PIN, they can sign transactions from that card alone.

DCENT S gives you two different cards. The main S card signs transactions. The recovery card cannot sign anything. It only holds an encrypted backup of the private key. If someone finds only the recovery card, they cannot move funds. They would need the recovery card, its separate PIN, and then their own S card to restore your wallet and access anything. Signing and backup are physically separated.

The flip side: you now have two different PINs to manage. If you lose the recovery card PIN, you cannot restore from that card. Write both down and store them away from the cards themselves, in different locations.

Apps and coin support

DCENT's app covers slightly more blockchain networks overall and has integrated XRP and XLM earning features. If you hold XRP or XLM, you can access ecosystem dApps directly from the DCENT app while your keys stay on the card offline.

Tangem has Smart Gas, which lets you pay transaction fees in stablecoins instead of needing the native token of each network. If you withdraw USDT to Ethereum and have no ETH for gas, you can pay the fee in USDT directly. It works on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Base. Tangem also added Dynamic Addresses for Bitcoin in 2026, which generates a fresh receiving address for each incoming transaction by default.

Price

Both land around $50 to $60 depending on current promos. The DCENT kit includes both cards at that price. Tangem discount codes NORDIC and NYEXTRA26 stack at checkout for up to 30% off. The affiliate links on the review pages show the current prices: Tangem review and DCENT S review.

Which one fits your setup

Get Tangem if you want the simplest daily experience, you like the redundancy of multiple identical signing cards, or you use multiple chains and want to avoid managing gas tokens. Also the better choice if you want the most beginner-friendly setup possible.

Get DCENT S if you want the backup card physically separated from signing, you hold XRP or XLM and want the integrated ecosystem dApps, or you prefer a recovery card that does nothing useful for a thief who finds it without your main card.

Neither has a screen, so both require trusting your phone's display when verifying a transaction. If a trusted on-device screen matters to you, both companies also have screen-based wallets at a higher price. For everyone else, both of these are solid options at this price point. Neither has a single documented case of a user being drained through a hardware exploit since launch.
