Best Trezor Wallet 2026: Safe 3 vs Safe 5 vs Safe 7
Share
This comparison is for anyone trying to decide which Trezor model to get in 2026: Safe 3, Safe 5, or Safe 7.
Before getting into the models, the reason to choose Trezor over alternatives like Ledger is the open-source philosophy. Trezor's code is public, anyone can verify it actually does what they say. Ledger is closed source, so you have to trust them. And Trezor's handling of their own security incident is one of the reasons I trust them more after it, not less.
Trezor Safe 3 (around $79)
Trezor's most affordable model. Small, connects via USB-C to computer or Android. Two physical buttons for navigation in Trezor Suite. EAL6+ secure element chip. Keeps private keys locked and protected.
Downside: does not fully work on iPhone. Some people find it too small for smooth transactions, but that does not bother me personally. For basic cold storage, the Safe 3 does everything you need at an affordable price. Full Trezor Safe 3 review.
Trezor Safe 5 (around $169)
Main upgrade is the color touchscreen with haptic feedback. Slightly bigger than the Safe 3, easier to see when making transactions. Same chip and software as Safe 3. Also cable-connected.
Extra feature worth noting: a MicroSD card slot. When turned on, your wallet needs both your PIN code and this physical card to unlock. Optional and not many people use it. In practice the Safe 5 is the Safe 3 with an upgraded touchscreen. Full Trezor Safe 5 review.
Trezor Safe 7 (around $249)
On a completely different level. Wireless and works on computer, Android, and iPhone. Connection is instant and smooth via Bluetooth, while the Safe 3 and Safe 5 sometimes need cable replugging to connect.
Wireless charging, big battery, IP67 rating. Two secure element chips: the standard EAL6+ plus the TROPIC01, the first fully open and auditable secure element chip in any hardware wallet.
Quantum-ready: post-quantum signatures in the bootloader. When quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption arrive, Trezor can push a firmware update to make this wallet resistant. No need to buy a new device. Watch my Safe 7 vs Safe 5 comparison if you are deciding between the two. Full Trezor Safe 7 review.
My conclusion
- If you just want secure cold storage without spending a lot: Safe 3 does the job for $79.
- If you want to use your wallet daily and make a lot of transactions: Safe 5 touchscreen helps, but I personally would not pay the extra for that alone.
- If you want the most secure, most future-proof wallet: Safe 7, especially if you use an iPhone. The Safe 3 and Safe 5 do not fully work on iOS.
