What Is Tangem?
Tangem is a hardware wallet built as a credit-card sized NFC card with an EAL6+ certified secure element chip inside, the same security certification used in biometric passports and bank cards. Unlike Ledger or Trezor, Tangem has no seed phrase by default. You get a set of 2 or 3 identical cards, each a full backup of the others. Tap a card to your phone to use the wallet.
That one design decision removes the biggest failure mode in crypto: seed phrase mistakes account for 80–90% of real-world user losses. When there is no seed phrase to lose, forget, or get tricked into sharing, most of those losses simply do not happen.

Tangem works exclusively through the Tangem mobile app on your phone. If you want to manage your crypto from a PC or Mac without picking up your phone, this wallet is not the right fit.
Users who need on-device verification
No screen means you trust your phone entirely. If you want to verify contract addresses on a separate trusted display, use a wallet with a screen.
Open-source firmware required
Tangem's chip firmware is proprietary. The mobile app is open source but the secure element is not. Trezor Safe 3 or Safe 7 are the alternatives.

For most users, yes. The seedless approach removes the failure mode behind 80–90% of real-world crypto losses. But Tangem has trade-offs: no screen means you cannot verify transaction details on the device itself (blind signing risk), and losing all cards simultaneously with no seed phrase backup means no recovery. The "Watch Before You Buy" video covers both sides honestly.
The other cards in your set still work as full backups. That is the point of the multi-card system. Lose one, use another. Then buy a replacement card to restore your redundancy.
If you set up with the default seedless backup and lose all cards simultaneously, the wallet is not recoverable. This is why storing cards in physically separate locations matters. If you used seed phrase mode during setup, you can recover to any BIP-39 compatible wallet using those words.
Yes. Seed phrase mode is available as an option during setup. You can also import an existing seed phrase from another wallet. Useful if you are switching from Ledger, Trezor, or a software wallet and want to keep the same addresses.
Yes, on both iPhone and Android via NFC. For iPhone, NFC requires iOS 13 or later (iPhone XS or newer). Older iPhones lack NFC background reading support and may not be compatible.
No. Tangem is mobile-only. There is no desktop app and no browser extension. All operations happen through the Tangem app on your phone.
Since 2017, there have been zero security incidents affecting user funds. The theoretical PIN tearing attack requires physical possession, specialized lab equipment, and deep technical expertise, not a practical risk. Using an 8-digit PIN makes this attack take roughly 460 days of continuous attempts versus about 1 hour with a 4-digit PIN.
Blind signing means you approve a transaction based on what your phone screen shows, without verifying those details on a separate trusted display built into the device. If your phone were compromised and showing false details, you would not know. In practice, no Tangem users have lost funds through blind signing since 2017, but it is a real consideration for heavy DeFi users.
No, and this is by design. The chip firmware is fixed at manufacture. This eliminates the entire firmware attack surface since there is no update mechanism to compromise. The Tangem mobile app receives regular updates with new features.
