Tangem vs Ellipal X Card: Card Wallet Comparison

This comparison covers Tangem against the Ellipal X Card to determine which is the better card-style wallet. Both are NFC cards you tap on your phone, both are mobile-only, both are affordable, and both take just a couple of minutes to set up.

What they share

Both have no screen, so the entire user interface lives on your phone. That means when you sign a transaction you are trusting your phone to display the correct address (blind signing).

The fundamental difference: backup approach

Tangem is seedless by default. Your private key lives inside two or three physical cards, and any one of those cards gets you back in. There is no seed phrase of words you can lose or get scammed out of.

Ellipal only offers seed-phrase backup. However, it does this better than any other card wallet because the seed is generated fully offline on the separate Starter device that comes with the card. So Ellipal has the safer initial setup process, while Tangem has the safer and more flexible ongoing backup.

Passphrases

Ellipal supports passphrases fully, both when creating a new wallet and when importing one. Tangem only lets you import a wallet that already has a passphrase. You cannot create a new Tangem wallet with a passphrase.

Coin/network support and app features

Tangem wins clearly here. It supports over 87 blockchain networks. Ellipal sits at around 45. Both are still solid, but Tangem is broader.

Tangem's app also does more: staking on more chains, stablecoin yield through Aave built directly into the app, and the ability to pay network fees in stablecoins instead of the native coin. Ellipal offers staking on a handful of coins and little else.

Price

A Tangem set costs around $55. The Ellipal X Card is around $79, but that price includes the offline Starter device.

My conclusion

Get Tangem if you want the simplest wallet that is the hardest to mess up, the widest coin support, and the better app experience.

Get the Ellipal X Card if you want a real seed phrase that can include a passphrase and that is generated fully offline.

Both are good options, just built around slightly different priorities.
