I used someone's Android phone, somewhere on the other side of the world, as if it was a computer sitting right next to me. I did not know who owned it. I did not know where it was. But I sent code from my laptop, it landed on their phone, ran on their phone, and sent the result back to me. This is what Acurast's Cargo update makes possible, and it is the biggest thing to happen to this network since mainnet launched.
Here is what changed, why it matters if you are running phones for ACU rewards, and how I actually tested it myself.
What is Cargo?
Before Cargo, the jobs that could run on Acurast phones were limited to basic scripts. That worked for small tasks, but it meant developers could only do lightweight work. Cargo removes that ceiling. Your phone can now run almost anything a normal computer can: real software, data processing, automation, full remote access. The update brings Linux containers, SSH access, and support for Python, Go, and Rust alongside the existing Node.js support.
To put it simply: before Cargo, Acurast phones were useful in a limited way. After Cargo, they are proper compute nodes that developers can use for almost any kind of workload.
How I Tested It
I wanted to see it working myself. I am not a developer, so I followed Acurast's own examples and used AI to help fill in the gaps. It took me two days to get it working. What I built is an SSH tunnel, which is a secure connection that lets you type commands on your laptop and have them run on another machine, in this case on a random phone somewhere on the Acurast network.
The phone could be anywhere in the world. It belongs to someone running it for ACU rewards, just like I am and you might be. So I had no idea who they were. They had no idea I was using their phone. The network just matched us up.
When it worked, I got live connection messages back from the phone as it set itself up. SSH server starting. Tunnel ready. Then a real address and port ready to accept a connection. I opened my terminal, typed the connect command, and I was inside a live Linux shell running on a stranger's phone.
That message traveled from my laptop, through the internet, to a phone I have never seen, and back to me. I was just running the simplest example from Acurast's own documentation. Real developers can build far more useful things than this.
Why This Matters for People Running Phones
The long-term value of running phones on Acurast depends on developers actually wanting to use the network. Before Cargo, the work was too limited to attract serious developer projects. That was the honest limitation. Cargo is what changes that.
More developers building on the network means more demand for the compute that phones provide. More demand connects directly to the value of ACU, which is what everyone running phones gets paid in. These phones are no longer just getting rewarded for providing potential. They are actual computing infrastructure that developers anywhere in the world can now use for real work.
Cargo is still in preview, so the developer experience will improve further over the coming months. But the core capability is working now.

If you are already running Acurast, you do not need to do anything. Your phone handles Cargo jobs automatically alongside existing jobs. The update is on the network and developer side. Miners just keep providing compute and the network handles the rest.
